In Sardinia Pablo Volta photographed the archaeology of the nuraghe, Romanesque buildings, miners in Carbonia and salt pans in Cagliari, huts made with bulrushes in Sinis, farmers in Macomer. Barbagia charmed him: Orgosolo, Desulo, Carnival in Mamoiada. His photos express a new idea of art, politically involved in the reconstruction of Italy after the Second World War. This volume presents a selection of black and white illustrations and an opening essay by Uliano Lucas, a photographer and photography historian, and Tatiana Agliani.
PABLO VOLTA, born in Argentina but brought up in Italy, founded in 1952 a photographic agency, Fotografi Associati, with Garrubba, Rea, De Martiis. Their work for magazines like Il Mondo and L'Espresso supports the idea of journalism as investigation and social commentary. In 1954 Volta arrived in Sardinia with the Sicilian anthropologist Franco Cagnetta. Fascinated by the island, he came back several times before making the decision to live here, in San Sperate.
