Alessandro Riva presents the collection of anatomical waxworks by Clemente Susini on display in Cagliari, a collection that bears witness to an important period in the history of Italian science. The wax collection was put together by the young Sardinian anatomist Francesco Antonio Boi from 1801 until 1805 when he stayed in Florence for four years,
during which he commissioned the waxworks and assisted Susini in his anatomical dissections. The volume is a complete catalogue of Susini’s wax models, with essays that examine waxworks as works of art, comparing them to the collection in La Specola Museum in Florence. It includes a wonderful selection of illustrations and essays about the history of Susini’s collection and the history of the use of wax modelling in science and medicine, but also to make votive offerings and displays like Madame Tussaud’s Museum in London.
